Charles Williams
Führender britischer Karikaturist
Charles Williams war ein britischer Karikaturist, Radierer und Illustrator. Zwischen 1799 und 1815 war er der Hauptkarikaturist für den führenden britischen Verleger S. W. Fores. Er arbeitete in einem Stil, der dem von James Gillray ähnelte. In seinen früheren Werken verwendete Williams die Pseudonyme Ansell oder Argus; zusammen mit George Cruikshank und anderen illustrierte er The Every-Day Book von William Hone, das zwischen 1825 und 1826 herausgegeben wurde. Williams war der erste von vielen, die den 1. Herzog von Wellington karikierten; er veröffentlichte im September 1808, während des Halbinselkriegs, eine Zeichnung von ihm, in der der Herzog den Zopf des französischen Generals Jean-Andoche Junot abschneidet, der in der Schlacht von Vimeiro besiegt wurde.
