Charles Williams
Toonaangevend Brits karikaturist
Charles Williams was een Britse karikaturist, etser en illustrator. Tussen 1799 en 1815 was hij de belangrijkste karikaturist voor de toonaangevende Britse uitgever S. W. Fores. Hij werkte in een stijl die vergelijkbaar was met die van James Gillray. In zijn vroege werken gebruikte Williams de pseudoniemen Ansell of Argus; samen met George Cruikshank en anderen illustreerde hij The Every-Day Book van William Hone, uitgegeven tussen 1825 en 1826. Williams was de eerste van velen die de 1e hertog van Wellington karikatuurde; hij publiceerde een tekening van hem in september 1808, tijdens de Schiereilandoorlog, waarin de hertog de staart van de Franse generaal Jean-Andoche Junot afsnijdt, verslagen in de Slag bij Vimeiro.
