Domenico Gargiulo
Neapolitanischer Barockmaler für Landschaften
Domenico Gargiulo, genannt Micco Spadaro, war ein italienischer Maler der Barockzeit, hauptsächlich in Neapel tätig und bekannt für seine Landschaften, Genreszenen und Historienbilder. Domenico Gargiulo war der Sohn eines Schwertschmieds, was ihm den Spitznamen „Micco Spadaro“ einbrachte („spadaro“ bedeutet „Schwertschmied“). Er wurde in der Werkstatt des Schlachtenmalers Aniello Falcone ausgebildet, wo er Zeitgenosse von Andrea di Leone und Salvator Rosa war. Er arbeitete auch mit Viviano Codazzi zusammen, dessen Architekturbilder er Figuren hinzufügte. Seine frühen Werke wurden von Paul Bril beeinflusst, dessen Arbeiten er vermutlich durch die Landschaftsfresken von 1602 im Atrium von S. Maria Regina Coeli in Neapel kennengelernt hatte. Er wurde auch von Filippo Napoletano beeinflusst. Zu seinen Schülern gehörten Pietro Pesce und Ignazio Oliva. Er wurde von Sammlern wie Gaspar Roomer gefördert. Er arbeitete auch in der Certosa di San Martino, wo er im Coro dei Conversi und im Quarto del priori malte. Er schuf eine Darstellung des Aufstands von Masaniello und der Pest von 1656.
