Domenico Ghirlandaio

Domenico di Tommaso Curradi di Doffo Bigordi, connu professionnellement sous le nom de Domenico Ghirlandaio, également orthographié Ghirlandajo, était un peintre italien de la Renaissance né à Florence. Ghirlandaio faisait partie de la soi-disant « troisième génération » de la Renaissance florentine, aux côtés de Verrocchio, des frères Pollaiolo et Sandro Botticelli. Ghirlandaio dirigeait un grand et efficace atelier qui comprenait ses frères Davide Ghirlandaio et Benedetto Ghirlandaio, son beau-frère Bastiano Mainardi de San Gimignano, et plus tard son fils Ridolfo Ghirlandaio. De nombreux apprentis sont passés par l’atelier de Ghirlandaio, dont le célèbre Michel-Ange。 Le talent particulier de Ghirlandaio résidait dans sa capacité à situer des représentations de la vie contemporaine et des portraits de personnes contemporaines dans le contexte de récits religieux, ce qui lui a valu une grande popularité et de nombreuses commandes importantes.
