Edwin Austin Abbey

Edwin Austin Abbey était un muraliste, illustrateur et peintre américain. Il a prospéré au début de ce que l'on appelle aujourd'hui l'« âge d'or » de l'illustration, et est surtout connu pour ses dessins et peintures sur des thèmes shakespeariens et victoriens, ainsi que pour sa peinture représentant le couronnement d'Édouard VII. Son ensemble de fresques le plus célèbre, La Quête et l'Accomplissement du Saint Graal, orne la Bibliothèque publique de Boston. Abbey est né à Philadelphie en 1852. Il a étudié l'art à la Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts sous la direction de Christian Schuessele. Abbey a commencé sa carrière comme illustrateur, produisant de nombreuses illustrations et croquis pour des magazines tels que Harper's Weekly (1871–1874) et Scribner's Magazine. Ses illustrations ont commencé à paraître dans Harper's Weekly à un jeune âge : avant qu'Abbey n'ait vingt ans. Il a déménagé à New York en 1871. Ses illustrations étaient fortement influencées par l'art en noir et blanc français et allemand. Il a également illustré plusieurs livres à succès, dont Les Contes de Noël de Charles Dickens (1875), Sélections de la poésie de Robert Herrick (1882) et Elle s'abaisse pour vaincre d'Oliver Goldsmith (1887). Abbey a aussi illustré une édition en quatre volumes des Comédies de Shakespeare pour Harper & Brothers en 1896.
