Edwin Austin Abbey
Maestro dell'illustrazione shakespeariana
Edwin Austin Abbey è stato un muralista, illustratore e pittore americano. Ha prosperato all'inizio di quello che oggi viene definito l'«età d'oro» dell'illustrazione, ed è meglio conosciuto per i suoi disegni e dipinti di soggetti shakespeariani e vittoriani, nonché per il suo dipinto dell'incoronazione di Edoardo VII. Il suo ciclo di affreschi più famoso, La ricerca e il conseguimento del Sacro Graal, decora la Biblioteca Pubblica di Boston. Abbey nacque a Filadelfia nel 1852. Studiò arte alla Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts sotto la guida di Christian Schuessele. Abbey iniziò come illustratore, producendo numerose illustrazioni e schizzi per riviste come Harper's Weekly (1871–1874) e Scribner's Magazine. Le sue illustrazioni cominciarono ad apparire su Harper's Weekly in giovane età: prima che Abbey compisse vent'anni. Si trasferì a New York City nel 1871. Le sue illustrazioni erano fortemente influenzate dall'arte in bianco e nero francese e tedesca. Illustrò anche diversi libri bestseller, tra cui Racconti di Natale di Charles Dickens (1875), Selezione dalle poesie di Robert Herrick (1882) e Lei si umilia per conquistare di Oliver Goldsmith (1887). Abbey illustrò inoltre un'edizione in quattro volumi delle Commedie di Shakespeare per Harper & Brothers nel 1896.
