Edwin Austin Abbey was een Amerikaanse muurschilder, illustrator en schilder. Hij bloeide op aan het begin van wat nu wordt aangeduid als de 'gouden eeuw' van de illustratie, en is vooral bekend om zijn tekeningen en schilderijen van Shakespeare- en Victoriaanse onderwerpen, evenals om zijn schilderij van de kroning van Eduard VII. Zijn beroemdste reeks muurschilderingen, De Zoektocht en Verwezenlijking van de Heilige Graal, siert de Boston Public Library. Abbey werd in 1852 geboren in Philadelphia. Hij studeerde kunst aan de Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts onder Christian Schuessele. Abbey begon als illustrator en produceerde talloze illustraties en schetsen voor tijdschriften zoals Harper's Weekly (1871–1874) en Scribner's Magazine. Zijn illustraties verschenen al op jonge leeftijd in Harper's Weekly: voordat Abbey twintig jaar oud was. Hij verhuisde in 1871 naar New York City. Zijn illustraties werden sterk beïnvloed door de Franse en Duitse zwart-witkunst. Hij illustreerde ook verschillende bestsellers, waaronder Kerstverhalen van Charles Dickens (1875), Selecties uit de poëzie van Robert Herrick (1882) en Zij buigt zich om te overwinnen van Oliver Goldsmith (1887). Abbey illustreerde in 1896 ook een vierdelige set van De Komedies van Shakespeare voor Harper & Brothers.
