Edwin Austin Abbey

Edwin Austin Abbey foi um muralista, ilustrador e pintor americano. Ele floresceu no início do que hoje é referido como a «era de ouro» da ilustração, e é mais conhecido por seus desenhos e pinturas de temas shakespearianos e vitorianos, bem como por sua pintura da coroação de Eduardo VII. Seu conjunto de murais mais famoso, A Busca e a Conquista do Santo Graal, enfeita a Biblioteca Pública de Boston. Abbey nasceu em Filadélfia em 1852. Ele estudou arte na Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts sob a orientação de Christian Schuessele. Abbey começou como ilustrador, produzindo numerosas ilustrações e esboços para revistas como Harper's Weekly (1871–1874) e Scribner's Magazine. Suas ilustrações começaram a aparecer na Harper's Weekly cedo: antes de Abbey completar vinte anos. Ele se mudou para a cidade de Nova York em 1871. Suas ilustrações foram fortemente influenciadas pela arte em preto e branco francesa e alemã. Ele também ilustrou vários livros mais vendidos, incluindo Contos de Natal de Charles Dickens (1875), Seleções da Poesia de Robert Herrick (1882) e Ela Se Humilha para Conquistar de Oliver Goldsmith (1887). Abbey também ilustrou uma coleção em quatro volumes das Comédias de Shakespeare para a Harper & Brothers em 1896.
