彼は1859年頃、ウィルトシャー州のフィシャートン・アンガーでエドウィン・ジョン・フォーリーとして生まれ、ソールズベリーのフィシャートン・キャビネット・ワークスの家具製造業者アーサー・フォーリーとその妻ジェーンの間の第2子で長男でした。彼は少なくとも一部をロンドンで教育を受け、その間、叔父のピーターと叔母のローダ・マリー・ブラウンと一緒に暮らしていました。 彼は少なくとも1880年代初頭から父親のためにデザイナーとして働いていましたが、1891年までに妻のルイザ・モード（旧姓ヘイフォード）とともにメリーレボーンのシャーロット街に住んでいました。二人は1882年に結婚し、3人の子供をもうけました。コンラッド・ヘイフォード（1885年生）、ヒューバート・エドウィン（1887年生）、アラン・ヴィクター（1888年生）です。
