Edwin Forbes

Edwin Austin Forbes war ein amerikanischer Landschaftsmaler und Radierer, der während des Amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs erstmals durch seine detaillierten und dramatischen Skizzen militärischer Themen, einschließlich Schlachtfeldkampfszenen, berühmt wurde. Forbes wurde in New York geboren, studierte bei Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait und begann als Tier- und Landschaftsmaler. Während des Bürgerkriegs war er Sonderkünstler für Frank Leslie's Magazine. Viele der lebhaften Radierungen, die er während des Konflikts zeichnete, wurden später von General Sherman der Regierung übergeben. Sie werden heute im Kriegsministerium in Washington aufgrund ihres historischen Werts aufbewahrt. Nach dem Krieg malte Forbes Landschaften und Viehszenen, darunter „Orange County Pasture“ (1879) und „Evening—Sheep Pasture“ (1881). 1877 wurde er zum Ehrenmitglied des London Etching Club ernannt. Er starb 1895 in Brooklyn und ist auf dem Green-Wood Cemetery beigesetzt.
