Edwin Forbes
Graveur de guerre et peintre pastoral
Edwin Austin Forbes était un peintre de paysages et graveur américain qui a d'abord acquis la renommée pendant la guerre de Sécession américaine pour ses esquisses détaillées et dramatiques de sujets militaires, y compris des scènes de combat sur le champ de bataille. Forbes est né à New York, a étudié sous Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait et a commencé comme peintre d'animaux et de paysages. Pendant la guerre de Sécession, il était artiste spécial pour le magazine Frank Leslie. Beaucoup de ses gravures animées qu'il a dessinées pendant le conflit ont été présentées plus tard par le général Sherman au gouvernement. Elles sont maintenant conservées au ministère de la Guerre à Washington en raison de leur valeur historique. Après la guerre, Forbes a peint des paysages et des scènes de bétail, parmi lesquelles « Orange County Pasture » (1879) et « Evening—Sheep Pasture » (1881). En 1877, il a été nommé membre honoraire du London Etching Club. Il est mort en 1895 à Brooklyn et est inhumé au cimetière de Green-Wood.
