Edwin Forbes
Incisore di guerra e pittore pastorale
Edwin Austin Forbes era un pittore di paesaggi e incisore americano che per primo acquisì fama durante la Guerra Civile Americana per i suoi schizzi dettagliati e drammatici di soggetti militari, incluse scene di combattimento sul campo di battaglia. Forbes è nato a New York, ha studiato con Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait e ha iniziato come pittore di animali e paesaggi. Durante la Guerra Civile, è stato artista speciale per la rivista Frank Leslie. Molte delle incisioni vivaci che ha disegnato durante il conflitto sono state poi presentate dal Generale Sherman al governo. Ora sono conservate nell'Ufficio della Guerra a Washington a causa del loro valore storico. Dopo la guerra, Forbes dipinse paesaggi e scene di bestiame, tra cui «Orange County Pasture» (1879) e «Evening—Sheep Pasture» (1881). Nel 1877 fu nominato membro onorario del London Etching Club. Morì nel 1895 a Brooklyn ed è sepolto nel Green-Wood Cemetery.
