남북전쟁 판화가이자 목가적 화가
에드윈 오스틴 포브스는 미국의 풍경 화가이자 에칭 작가로, 미국 남북전쟁 중에 전투 장면을 포함한 군사 주제에 대한 상세하고 극적인 스케치로 처음 명성을 얻었습니다. 포브스는 뉴욕에서 태어나 아서 피츠윌리엄 테이트에게 사사받았으며, 동물과 풍경화가로 시작했습니다. 남북전쟁 중 그는 프랭크 레슬리 매거진의 특파 아티스트였습니다. 그가 분쟁 중에 그린 활기찬 에칭 중 다수는 나중에 셔먼 장군에 의해 정부에 기증되었습니다. 이들은 역사적 가치로 인해 현재 워싱턴의 전쟁부에 보존되어 있습니다. 전쟁 후, 포브스는 풍경과 가축 장면을 그렸으며, 그중에는 "오렌지 카운티 목장"(1879년)과 "저녁—양 목장"(1881년)이 있다. 1877년 그는 런던 에칭 클럽의 명예 회원으로 임명되었다. 그는 1895년 브루클린에서 사망했으며 그린우드 묘지에 안장되었다.
