Edwin Forbes
Oorlogsetser en landschapsschilder
Edwin Austin Forbes was een Amerikaans landschapsschilder en etser die tijdens de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog voor het eerst bekendheid verwierf met zijn gedetailleerde en dramatische schetsen van militaire onderwerpen, inclusief gevechtsscènes op het slagveld. Forbes werd geboren in New York, studeerde onder Arthur Fitzwilliam Tait en begon als dieren- en landschapsschilder. Tijdens de Burgeroorlog was hij speciale kunstenaar voor Frank Leslie's Magazine. Veel van de levendige etsen die hij tijdens het conflict tekende, werden later door generaal Sherman aan de overheid gepresenteerd. Ze worden nu bewaard in het War Office in Washington vanwege hun historische waarde. Na de oorlog schilderde Forbes landschappen en veescènes, waaronder "Orange County Pasture" (1879) en "Evening—Sheep Pasture" (1881). In 1877 werd hij benoemd tot erelid van de London Etching Club. Hij stierf in 1895 in Brooklyn en is begraven op de Green-Wood Cemetery.
