Ernst Stückelberg

Ernst Stückelberg était un peintre suisse originaire de Bâle, né dans une famille dont les liens avec la ville remontaient au XIVe siècle. Il est décédé des complications du diabète. Il fut l’un des artistes les plus populaires de sa génération dans la tradition romantique, produisant de nombreuses peintures sur divers thèmes (portraits, scènes de campagne et de villages, allusions historiques), notamment une série consacrée au héros national suisse Guillaume Tell. Il adopta officiellement le nom de Stückelberg en 1881 ; ce changement fut dûment enregistré par les autorités de Bâle.
