Francis Hayman
Pittore rococò, fondatore della Royal Academy
Francis Hayman RA era un pittore e illustratore inglese che divenne uno dei membri fondatori della Royal Academy nel 1768, e in seguito il suo primo bibliotecario. Nato a Exeter, nel Devon, Hayman iniziò la sua carriera artistica come scenografo al teatro Drury Lane di Londra (dove apparve anche in ruoli minori) prima di stabilire uno studio a St Martin's Lane. Artista versatile influenzato dallo stile rococò francese, ottenne una certa notorietà negli anni '40 del Settecento grazie a dipinti decorativi realizzati per i padiglioni da pranzo nei Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens di Londra. Hayman fu anche un ritrattista e pittore di storia di successo. Combinando alcuni di questi, contribuì con 31 immagini a un'edizione del 1744 delle opere di Shakespeare curata da Sir Thomas Hanmer, e in seguito ritrasse molti attori contemporanei di spicco nei ruoli shakespeariani, tra cui David Garrick nel ruolo di Riccardo III (1760). Illustrò anche Pamela, un romanzo di Samuel Richardson, il Paradiso perduto e il Paradiso riconquistato di Milton, la traduzione di Don Chisciotte di Tobias Smollett e altre opere ben note. Negli anni '60 del Settecento, Hayman fu incaricato da Jonathan Tyers, proprietario dei Giardini di Vauxhall e della tenuta di Denbies, di dipingere una serie di grandi tele storiche che raffiguravano le vittorie britanniche nella Guerra dei Sette Anni. Era un insegnante capace. I suoi allievi includevano Mason Chamberlin, Nathaniel Dance-Holland, Thomas Seton e Lemuel Francis Abbott, ed esercitò anche una forte influenza su Thomas Gainsborough. Insieme a Joshua Reynolds, Hayman fu attivamente coinvolto nella formazione della Society of Artists, precursore della Royal Academy, all'inizio degli anni 1760. Hayman morì nel 1776 e fu sepolto in una tomba senza nome nella chiesa di St Anne, a Soho.
