Francis Hayman
Pintor rococó, fundador da Royal Academy
Francis Hayman RA foi um pintor e ilustrador inglês que se tornou um dos membros fundadores da Royal Academy em 1768, e mais tarde seu primeiro bibliotecário. Nascido em Exeter, Devon, Hayman começou sua carreira artística como cenógrafo no teatro Drury Lane de Londres (onde também apareceu em papéis menores) antes de estabelecer um estúdio em St Martin's Lane. Um artista versátil influenciado pelo estilo rococó francês, ele alcançou certa notoriedade na década de 1740 por meio de pinturas decorativas executadas para as cabines de jantar nos Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens em Londres. Hayman também foi um retratista e pintor histórico bem-sucedido. Combinando alguns desses, ele contribuiu com 31 imagens para uma edição de 1744 das peças de Shakespeare por Sir Thomas Hanmer, e mais tarde retratou muitos atores contemporâneos proeminentes em papéis shakespearianos, incluindo David Garrick como Ricardo III (1760). Ele também ilustrou Pamela, um romance de Samuel Richardson, O Paraíso Perdido e O Paraíso Reconquistado de Milton, a tradução de Dom Quixote por Tobias Smollett e outras obras bem conhecidas. Na década de 1760, Hayman foi contratado por Jonathan Tyers, proprietário dos Jardins de Vauxhall e da propriedade Denbies, para pintar uma série de pinturas históricas em grande escala retratando as vitórias britânicas na Guerra dos Sete Anos. Ele era um professor competente. Seus alunos incluíam Mason Chamberlin, Nathaniel Dance-Holland, Thomas Seton e Lemuel Francis Abbott, e ele também teve uma forte influência sobre Thomas Gainsborough. Com Joshua Reynolds, Hayman esteve ativamente envolvido na formação da Society of Artists, um precursor da Royal Academy, no início dos anos 1760. Hayman morreu em 1776 e foi enterrado em um túmulo sem identificação na Igreja de St Anne, em Soho.
