François-André Vincent

François-André Vincent era un pittore neoclassico francese. Era figlio del miniaturista François-Elie Vincent e studiò sotto Joseph-Marie Vien. François-André Vincent fu allievo dell'École Royale des Élèves Protégés. Dal 1771 al 1775 studiò all'Accademia di Francia a Roma. Si recò a Roma dopo aver vinto il Prix de Rome con «Germanico calma la sedizione nel suo campo» nel 1768, e si stabilì al Palazzo Mancini, dove dipinse numerosi ritratti, ispirati dallo stile di Jean-Honoré Fragonard, che nello stesso periodo visitava anch'egli Roma e Napoli. Nel 1790, Vincent fu nominato maestro di disegno di Luigi XVI di Francia e nel 1792 divenne professore all'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture a Parigi. Nel 1800 sposò la pittrice Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, nota per la sua maestria nella pittura di ritratti, membro dell'Accademia Reale e pittrice della Famiglia Reale. Fu uno dei leader del movimento neoclassico e storico nell'arte francese, insieme al suo rivale Jacques-Louis David, anch'egli allievo di Vien. Fu influenzato dall'arte dell'antichità classica e dai maestri dell'Alto Rinascimento italiano, in particolare Raffaello. François-André Vincent fu uno dei principali innovatori dei soggetti e dei temi nell'arte francese di stile neoclassico, e le sue opere erano di alto livello. Fu uno dei membri fondatori dell'Académie des beaux-arts – parte dell'Institut de France e successore dell'Académie royale – nel 1795. Verso la fine della sua vita dipinse meno a causa di problemi di salute, ma continuò a ricevere onori ufficiali.
