Fritz Reiss

Fritz Winold Reiss was een Duitse lithograaf, illustrator, grafisch kunstenaar en schilder. Reiss studeerde aan de Kunstacademie van Düsseldorf onder Karl Müller en Heinrich Lauenstein. Vervolgens werkte hij tot 1878 in de lithografische zaak van zijn vader in Düsseldorf. Van 1878 tot 1882 woonde hij in Stuttgart, daarna in Lahr (1882 tot 1886), Karlsruhe (1886 tot 1888), Leipzig (1888 tot 1892), vervolgens weer in Stuttgart en van 1899 tot 1908 in Freiburg im Breisgau aan de Zasiusstraße 70. Reiss was a member of the artists' association "Breisgauer Fünfer", founded in 1899, whose chairman was Hermann Dischler. He had lived in Kirchzarten since 1908, where he joined the painters of the so-called Gutach artists' colony. In his drawings, watercolors and paintings, he captured the country, the people and the customs of the Black Forest in a narrative and humorous way, not without social criticism. He illustrated numerous magazines, novels and books, including picture books for children and youth literature, and designed postcards and ceramics. De Duits-Amerikaanse schilder Winold Reiss was zijn tweede zoon.
