George Henry Mason

George Henry Mason fue un oficial del ejército británico, mayor en el tardío 102.º Regimiento de Infantería (Royal Madras Fusiliers) creado por la Compañía de las Indias Orientales en 1795, y luego teniente coronel en 1801. Mason había viajado a Cantón en 1789. Era una de las dos únicas ciudades de China que los extranjeros podían visitar legalmente en ese momento, y Mason disfrutó de la oportunidad de proporcionar "instrucción parcial y diversión general" sobre una tierra extranjera "exótica" a una audiencia fascinada pero parroquial de turistas de sillón en Inglaterra. Se convirtió en autor de dos obras influyentes, The Costume of China (1800) y The Punishments of China (1801).
