George Henry Mason

George Henry Mason était un officier de l'armée britannique, devenu major au 102e régiment d'infanterie (Royal Madras Fusiliers) levé par la Compagnie des Indes orientales en 1795, puis lieutenant-colonel en 1801. Mason s'était rendu à Canton en 1789. C'était l'une des deux seules villes de Chine que les étrangers pouvaient légalement visiter à l'époque, et Mason a savouré l'occasion de fournir une « instruction partielle et un divertissement général » sur une terre étrangère « exotique » à un public de touristes en fauteuil en Angleterre, fascinés mais paroissiaux. Il est devenu l'auteur de deux ouvrages influents, The Costume of China (1800) et The Punishments of China (1801).
