George Henry Mason

George Henry Mason era un ufficiale dell'esercito britannico, maggiore nel 102° Reggimento di Fanteria (Royal Madras Fusiliers) istituito dalla Compagnia delle Indie Orientali nel 1795, e poi tenente colonnello nel 1801. Mason si era recato a Canton nel 1789. Era una delle uniche due città in Cina che gli stranieri potevano visitare legalmente all'epoca, e Mason colse l'opportunità di fornire "istruzione parziale e divertimento generale" su una terra straniera "esotica" a un pubblico affascinato ma ristretto di turisti da poltrona in Inghilterra. Divenne autore di due opere influenti, The Costume of China (1800) e The Punishments of China (1801).
