조지 헨리 메이슨
중국 풍속과 형벌 기록
조지 헨리 메이슨은 영국 육군 장교로, 1795년 동인도 회사가 창설한 제102보병연대(로열 매드라스 퓨질리어 연대)의 소령이 되었고, 이후 1801년에는 중령으로 진급했다. 메이슨은 1789년 광저우를 방문했다. 당시 광저우는 외국인이 합법적으로 방문할 수 있었던 중국 내 단 두 도시 중 하나였으며, 메이슨은 영국의 시야가 좁지만 호기심 많은 '안락의자 여행자'들에게 '이국적인' 외국 땅에 대한 '부분적인 지식과 일반적인 오락'을 제공할 수 있는 기회를 즐겼다. 그는 영향력 있는 두 저서인 《중국의 복식》(1800년)과 《중국의 형벌》(1801년)의 저자가 되었다.
