George Henry Mason

George Henry Mason foi um oficial do exército britânico, major no 102.º Regimento de Infantaria (Royal Madras Fusiliers) criado pela Companhia das Índias Orientais em 1795, e depois tenente-coronel em 1801. Mason havia viajado para Cantão em 1789. Era uma das únicas duas cidades na China que os estrangeiros podiam visitar legalmente na época, e Mason aproveitou a oportunidade para fornecer "instrução parcial e diversão geral" sobre uma terra estrangeira "exótica" a um público fascinado, mas paroquial, de turistas de poltrona na Inglaterra. Tornou-se autor de duas obras influentes, The Costume of China (1800) e The Punishments of China (1801).
