George Walker wurde 1781 nahe Leeds geboren, als der jüngste von fünf Brüdern; sein Vater William war ein Drogerist und ein Mitglied der Mill Hill Chapel. George wurde in Mansfield und dann an der Schule des Revd. Charles Wellbeloved in York erzogen. Anstatt dem Beruf seines Vater zu folgen, studierte er Naturgeschichte und bildende Kunst und fertigte oft Skizzen von Wildtieren, Menschen und Landschaften. Er starb 1856.
