Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo

Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo war ein italienischer Maler und Radierer. Er war der Sohn des Künstlers Giovanni Battista Tiepolo und der ältere Bruder von Lorenzo Baldissera Tiepolo. Domenico wurde in Venedig geboren, studierte bei seinem Vater und war im Alter von 13 Jahren dessen Hauptassistent. Er war einer der vielen Assistenten, einschließlich Lorenzo, die die Entwürfe seines Vaters (ausgeführt in der von ihm selbst erfundenen „Ölskizze“) übertrugen. Mit 20 Jahren schuf er eigene Werke für Auftraggeber. Er unterstützte seinen Vater 1751–1753 in Würzburg bei der Dekoration des berühmten Treppenhausfreskos, 1757 in Vicenza in der Villa Valmarana und von 1762 bis 1770 in Madrid im Palast Karls III. Sein Malstil entwickelte sich nach dem Tod seines Vaters im Jahr 1770, woraufhin er nach Venedig zurückkehrte und dort sowie in Genua und Padua arbeitete. Obwohl seine Malerei den dekorativen Einfluss seines Vaters bewahrte, löste sie sich von dessen räumlicher Fantasie und nahm zunehmend eine realistischere Darstellung an. Seine Porträts und Szenen des venezianischen Lebens sind durch Bewegung, Farbe und eine bewusste Komposition gekennzeichnet.
