Giovanni Grubacs
Meester van gedetailleerde Venetiaanse gezichten
Giovanni Grubacs, een gevierde negentiende-eeuwse schilder van Venetiaanse taferelen, was een zeer bekwaam kunstenaar en de zoon van Carlo Grubacs, een gewaardeerd schilder van vergelijkbare onderwerpen. Stilistisch schilderden zowel Giovanni als Carlo meestal kleine panelen van uitzonderlijk hoge kwaliteit, met nauwgezette aandacht voor detail en precisie. Veel van hun werken toonden beroemde Venetiaanse taferelen langs het Canal Grande, zoals het Dogepaleis en de Rialtobrug. Giovanni volgde de grote traditie van de Venetiaanse kunstenaars uit de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw, sterk beïnvloed door schilders zoals Francesco Guardi (1712-1793) en Antonio Canal Canaletto (1697-1768). Grubacs was van Duitse afkomst, maar bracht het grootste deel van zijn leven door in Italië. Hij overleed in 1919 in Venetië na een lang en vruchtbaar leven. Zijn werken zijn vandaag nog steeds even populair als tijdens zijn leven en zijn te vinden in vele openbare en privécollecties over de hele wereld.
