Riva degli Schiavoni
Giovanni Grubacs captures the bustling energy of Venice in this sun-drenched view of the Riva degli Schiavoni, painted in the precise Academic style. The massive Doge's Palace dominates the right side with its intricate Gothic arches, while gondolas bob in the lagoon under a brilliant, cloud-streaked sky. Grubacs was a master of the veduta tradition, creating highly detailed scenes that served as perfect souvenirs for 19th-century Grand Tour travelers. Notice the tiny figures scattered everywhere—locals chatting, workers loading boats, and tourists soaking in the view—making the city feel wonderfully alive.
