Giulio Cesare Procaccini
Pittore barocco precoce tra manierismo e colorismo
Giulio Cesare Procaccini fu un pittore e scultore italiano del primo barocco a Milano. Nato a Bologna, era figlio del pittore manierista Ercole Procaccini il Vecchio. Iniziò come scultore nel Duomo di Milano e nella chiesa milanese di Santa Maria presso San Celso. Nel 1610 dipinse sei dei Quadroni, grandi tele che celebrano San Carlo Borromeo. Tra le sue numerose pale d'altare figurano la Circoncisione, oggi conservata alla Galleria Estense di Modena, e l'Ultima Cena per il convento annesso alla Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato a Genova. Dipinse anche la Flagellazione di Cristo. Dipinse anche piccole tele religiose per famiglie facoltose a Milano e a Genova, dove vide le opere di Rubens. Il suo stile mostra l'influenza del manierismo bolognese e del colorismo veneziano e segna l'inizio del barocco.
