Giulio Cesare Procaccini
Vroeg-barokke schilder die maniërisme en koloriet mengt
Giulio Cesare Procaccini was een Italiaanse schilder en beeldhouwer uit de vroege barokperiode in Milaan. Hij werd geboren in Bologna en was de zoon van de maniëristische schilder Ercole Procaccini de Oudere. Hij begon als beeldhouwer in de kathedraal van Milaan en in de Milanese kerk Santa Maria presso San Celso. In 1610 schilderde hij zes van de Quadroni, grote doeken ter ere van Sint-Carolus Borromeus. Tot zijn vele altaarstukken behoren de Besnijdenis, nu in de Galleria Estense in Modena, en het Laatste Avondmaal voor het klooster verbonden aan de Basiliek della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato in Genua. Hij schilderde ook de Geseling van Christus. Hij schilderde ook kleine religieuze doeken voor rijke families in Milaan en Genua, waar hij het werk van Rubens zag. Zijn stijl toont de invloed van het Bolognese maniërisme en het Venetiaanse colorisme en markeert het begin van de barok.
