Godfried Maes
Pintor flamenco de retablos y tapices
Godfried Maes fue un pintor flamenco, dibujante y diseñador de tapices. Fue activo como pintor de retablos y escenas alegóricas. Fue un dibujante prolífico que realizó diseños para talleres de tapices, editores y decoraciones de casas. Sus mecenas incluían a personalidades destacadas de los Países Bajos meridionales. Godfried Maes nació en Amberes, donde se formó con su padre y con el pintor de historia Pieter van Lint. Se convirtió en maestro del Gremio de San Lucas de Amberes en 1672 y se casó con Josina Baeckelandt en 1675. La pareja no tuvo hijos. Fue decano del gremio en 1682. Godfried Maes estuvo activo en Amberes entre 1664 y 1700. Su obra fue muy bien recibida en todos los Países Bajos meridionales. Completó encargos para iglesias y clientes privados en Amberes, Bruselas y Lieja. Trabajó para Eugen Alexander Franz, primer príncipe de Thurn y Taxis, en Bruselas, para quien realizó decoraciones de techo con escenas alegóricas que glorificaban a la familia Thurn y Taxis. Entre 1697 y 1700, trabajó para Maximiliano II Manuel, elector de Baviera, entonces gobernador de los Países Bajos meridionales, en la decoración del techo de su residencia, el Palacio de Coudenberg, en Bruselas. El diseño representaba las figuras de la Paz y la Libertad acompañadas por las musas Calíope y Clío. Fue el maestro de Willem Ignatius Kerricx, Matheus Neckens, Anthonie du Pré, Dominicus Smout, Jacob Sucquet y Gerard Thomas. Murió en Amberes el 30 de mayo de 1700, como atestigua la inscripción en su tumba en la iglesia de Santiago de Amberes.
