Godfried Maes
Pittore fiammingo di pale e arazzi
Godfried Maes era un pittore fiammingo, disegnatore e designer di arazzi. Era attivo come pittore di pale d'altare e scene allegoriche. Era un disegnatore prolifico che realizzava progetti per laboratori di arazzi, editori e decorazioni domestiche. I suoi mecenati includevano personalità di spicco nei Paesi Bassi meridionali. Godfried Maes nacque ad Anversa, dove si formò con il padre e con il pittore di storia Pieter van Lint. Divenne maestro nella Gilda di San Luca di Anversa nel 1672 e sposò Josina Baeckelandt nel 1675. La coppia non ebbe figli. Divenne decano della gilda nel 1682. Godfried Maes fu attivo ad Anversa nel periodo 1664-1700. La sua opera fu molto ben accolta in tutti i Paesi Bassi meridionali. Realizzò commissioni per chiese e clienti privati ad Anversa, Bruxelles e Liegi. Lavorò per Eugen Alexander Franz, primo principe di Thurn und Taxis, a Bruxelles, per il quale realizzò decorazioni soffittali con scene allegoriche che glorificavano la famiglia Thurn und Taxis. Tra il 1697 e il 1700, lavorò per Massimiliano II Emanuele, elettore di Baviera, allora governatore dei Paesi Bassi meridionali, alla decorazione del soffitto della sua residenza, il Palazzo di Coudenberg, a Bruxelles. Il design rappresentava le figure della Pace e della Libertà accompagnate dalle muse Calliope e Clio. Fu il maestro di Willem Ignatius Kerricx, Matheus Neckens, Anthonie du Pré, Dominicus Smout, Jacob Sucquet e Gerard Thomas. Morì ad Anversa il 30 maggio 1700, come testimoniato dall'iscrizione sulla sua tomba nella chiesa di San Giacomo ad Anversa.
