Godfried Maes
Pintor flamengo de retábulos e tapeçarias
Godfried Maes foi um pintor flamengo, desenhista e designer de tapeçarias. Ele atuou como pintor de retábulos e cenas alegóricas. Foi um desenhista prolífico que criou projetos para oficinas de tapeçaria, editoras e decorações de casas. Seus patronos incluíam personalidades líderes nos Países Baixos do Sul. Godfried Maes nasceu em Antuérpia, onde treinou com seu pai e com o pintor histórico Pieter van Lint. Tornou-se mestre na Guilda de São Lucas de Antuérpia em 1672 e casou-se com Josina Baeckelandt em 1675. O casal não teve filhos. Ele tornou-se reitor da guilda em 1682. Godfried Maes esteve ativo em Antuérpia no período de 1664 a 1700. Sua obra foi muito bem recebida em todos os Países Baixos do Sul. Ele completou encomendas para igrejas e clientes privados em Antuérpia, Bruxelas e Liège. Trabalhou para Eugen Alexander Franz, 1º Príncipe de Thurn e Taxis, em Bruxelas, para quem realizou decorações de teto com cenas alegóricas glorificando a família Thurn e Taxis. Entre 1697 e 1700, trabalhou para Maximiliano II Emanuel, Eleitor da Baviera, então governador dos Países Baixos do Sul, na decoração do teto de sua residência, o Palácio de Coudenberg, em Bruxelas. O design representava as figuras da Paz e da Liberdade acompanhadas pelas musas Calíope e Clio. Ele foi o mestre de Willem Ignatius Kerricx, Matheus Neckens, Anthonie du Pré, Dominicus Smout, Jacob Sucquet e Gerard Thomas. Ele morreu em Antuérpia em 30 de maio de 1700, conforme atestado pela inscrição em seu túmulo na Igreja de São Tiago em Antuérpia.
