Gustave Vanaise
Pittore storico fiammingo, fondatore Venti
Nato a Gand, dove fu istruito prima di completare la sua formazione a Bruxelles, nel 1883 Vanaise divenne uno dei membri fondatori del gruppo Les Vingt. Influenzato dall'arte fiamminga e successivamente da quella olandese, dopo una visita nei Paesi Bassi all'inizio del 1878, ma anche da contemporanei come Jan Van Beers, Vanaise si trasferì a Parigi nell'agosto 1878. Vi trascorse due anni e dipinse le sue prime grandi pitture storiche, che cominciò a esporre al Salon.
