グスタフ・ヴァネーズ
フランドル歴史画家、二十人団設立
ヴァネーズはヘントで生まれ、そこで教育を受けた後、ブリュッセルで修業を完了した。1883年、彼はグループ「レ・ヴァン」の創設メンバーの一人となった。1878年初頭の低地諸国への訪問によりフランドル美術、そして後にオランダ美術の影響を受け、さらにヤン・ファン・ベールスなどの同時代の画家たちにも影響されて、ヴァネーズは1878年8月にパリへ移住した。彼はそこで2年間を過ごし、最初の大型歴史画を制作し、サロンでの展示を始めた。
