Gustave Vanaise
Vlaams historieschilder, oprichter De Twintig
Geboren in Gent, waar hij werd onderwezen voordat hij zijn opleiding in Brussel voltooide, werd Vanaise in 1883 een van de oprichtende leden van de groep Les Vingt. Beïnvloed door de Vlaamse en later door de Nederlandse kunst, na een bezoek aan de Lage Landen begin 1878, maar ook door tijdgenoten zoals Jan Van Beers, verhuisde Vanaise in augustus 1878 naar Parijs. Hij bracht daar twee jaar door en schilderde zijn eerste grote historieschilderijen, die hij begon te exposeren in de Salon.
