Henry John Stock si formò presso le scuole della Royal Academy ed espose all'Accademia e altrove per molti anni. Sembra che si guadagnasse da vivere dipingendo ritratti, sebbene il suo vero interesse risiedesse in soggetti immaginativi espressi in uno stile che suggerisce l'influenza di William Blake e G. F. Watts. È possibile che avesse sentito una speciale affinità identitaria con Blake. Come Blake, nacque a Soho e visse in seguito a Felpham nel Sussex, dove Blake aveva trascorso gli anni 1800-1803 sotto il patronato di William Hayley.
