Henry Ossawa Tanner
Primer pintor negro de fama mundial
Henry Ossawa Tanner fue un artista estadounidense y el primer pintor afroamericano en obtener reconocimiento internacional. Tanner se trasladó a París, Francia, en 1891 para estudiar, y continuó viviendo allí después de ser aceptado en los círculos artísticos franceses. Su pintura titulada Daniel en el foso de los leones fue admitida en el Salón de 1896, la exposición artística oficial de la Académie des Beaux-Arts en París. Después de estudiar arte por su cuenta siendo joven, Tanner se inscribió en 1879 en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Pensilvania en Filadelfia. Siendo el único estudiante negro, se convirtió en el favorito del pintor Thomas Eakins, quien recientemente había comenzado a enseñar allí. Tanner estableció otras conexiones entre artistas, incluido Robert Henri. A finales de la década de 1890, fue patrocinado por Rodman Wanamaker para un viaje al Mutasarrifato de Jerusalén, quien quedó impresionado por sus pinturas de temas bíblicos.
