헨리 오사와 타너
국제적 명성 얻은 첫 흑인 화가
헨리 오사와 태너는 미국의 화가이자 국제적 명성을 얻은 최초의 아프리카계 미국인 화가였다. 태너는 1891년 프랑스 파리로 이주하여 공부했고, 프랑스 예술계에서 인정받은 후에도 계속 그곳에 머물렀다. 그의 작품 〈사자굴 속의 다니엘〉은 1896년 파리 미술아카데미의 공식 미술 전시회인 살롱에 출품되었다. 젊은 시절 미술을 독학한 후, 태너는 1879년 필라델피아의 펜실베이니아 아카데미 오브 더 파인 아츠에 입학했다. 당시 유일한 흑인 학생이었던 그는 최근 그곳에서 가르치기 시작한 화가 토머스 이킨스의 총애를 받았다. 태너는 로버트 헨리 등 다른 예술가들과도 교류했다. 1890년대 후반, 그의 성경 주제 회화에 감명받은 로드먼 와나메이커가 그를 예루살렘 무타사리파트로 여행 보내주었다.
