亨利·奧薩瓦·坦納
首位獲國際聲譽的黑人畫家
亨利·奧薩瓦·坦納是一位美國藝術家，也是第一位獲得國際聲譽的非裔美國畫家。坦納於1891年移居法國巴黎學習藝術，並在被接納進入法國藝術界後繼續在當地生活。他的畫作《但以理在獅子坑中》於1896年入選沙龍展——即巴黎美術學院的官方藝術展覽。 年輕時透過自學藝術後，坦納於1879年進入費城的賓州美術學院就讀。作為當時唯一的非裔學生，他深受畫家托馬斯·艾金斯的喜愛，後者當時剛開始在該校任教。坦納還與其他藝術家建立了聯繫，包括羅伯特·亨利。1890年代末，羅德曼·瓦納梅克因欣賞他創作的聖經題材畫作，資助他前往耶路撒冷穆塔薩里夫領地旅行。
