Gate in Tangier.
Henry Ossawa Tanner, the first African American artist to gain international acclaim, traded the Parisian salons for the sun-baked streets of Tangier in 1912. Though trained in a strict academic style, this sketch feels wonderfully loose and atmospheric, with a massive, shadow-drenched archway swallowing the light. Figures wrapped in heavy robes and a resting donkey add a sense of quiet daily life to the ancient architecture. Look closely at the bottom right corner for a 'T' inside a circle—Tanner’s personal monogram stamping his mark on this exotic vista.
