Henry Thomas Alken

Henry Thomas Alken fue un pintor y grabador inglés, conocido principalmente como caricaturista e ilustrador de temas deportivos y escenas de carruajes. Su período más prolífico en pintura y dibujo ocurrió entre 1816 y 1831. Alken nació el 12 de octubre de 1785 en Soho, Westminster, y fue bautizado el 6 de noviembre en la iglesia de St James's, Piccadilly. Era el tercer hijo de Samuel Alken, un artista deportivo. Dos de sus hermanos eran George y Samuel Alken el Joven, también artista. En 1789, la familia Alken se mudó de Soho al 2, Francis Street East, Bedford Square. El joven Henry estudió primero con su padre y luego con el pintor de miniaturas John Thomas Barber Beaumont (1774–1841), también conocido como J. T. Barber. En 1801, Alken envió un retrato en miniatura de la señorita Gubbins a la exposición de la Royal Academy. Expuso una segunda miniatura en la Royal Academy antes de abandonar la pintura en miniatura y dedicarse a la pintura y la ilustración. Al principio de su carrera, pintó temas deportivos bajo el nombre de «Ben Tally-O». Alken se casó con Maria Gordon el 14 de octubre de 1809 en la iglesia de St Clement en Ipswich. El 22 de agosto del año siguiente, el primer hijo de la pareja fue bautizado. Alken tuvo cinco hijos, dos de los cuales fueron artistas: Samuel Henry, también artista deportivo, conocido como Henry Alken junior, y Sefferien junior. A partir de alrededor de 1816, Alken «produjo un flujo interminable de pinturas, dibujos y grabados de todo tipo de actividades deportivas al aire libre y otras», y sus aguafuertes en manera negra a menudo eran coloreados a mano. Cuando Alken tenía 26 años, él y su joven familia vivían encima de una tienda en Haymarket que pertenecía al editor de estampas Thomas McLean, del «Repository of Wit and Humour». McLean le pagaba a Alken un salario diario de treinta chelines, considerado un buen ingreso en aquella época. Alken murió en abril de 1851 y fue enterrado en el cementerio de Highgate. Aunque fue bastante acomodado durante la mayor parte de su carrera, cayó en tiempos difíciles hacia el final de su vida y fue enterrado a expensas de su hija.
