Howard Pyle
Pioniere dell'illustrazione americana
Howard Pyle era un illustratore e autore statunitense, principalmente di libri per i giovani. Era originario di Wilmington, nel Delaware, e trascorse l'ultimo anno della sua vita a Firenze, in Italia. Nel 1894 iniziò a insegnare illustrazione al Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry (oggi Drexel University). Dopo il 1900 fondò la propria scuola d’arte e illustrazione chiamata Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. In seguito, lo studioso Henry C. Pitz coniò il termine “Scuola di Brandywine” per indicare gli illustratori e gli artisti della famiglia Wyeth provenienti dalla regione del Brandywine, molti dei quali avevano studiato con Pyle. Tra i suoi allievi più noti vi furono N. C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Elenore Abbott, Ethel Franklin Betts, Anna Whelan Betts, Harvey Dunn, Clyde O. DeLand, Philip R. Goodwin, Thornton Oakley, Violet Oakley, Ellen Bernard Thompson Pyle, Olive Rush, Blanche Grant, Ethel Leach, Allen Tupper True, Elizabeth Shippen Green, Arthur E. Becher, William James Aylward, Jessie Willcox Smith e Charlotte Harding. Pyle insegnava ai suoi studenti nella sua casa e nel suo studio a Wilmington, edificio tuttora esistente e iscritto nel National Register of Historic Places. Pyle fu uno dei primi membri del Franklin Inn Club di Filadelfia. La sua opera classica del 1883, Le allegre avventure di Robin Hood, è ancora in stampa, e i suoi altri libri spesso hanno ambientazioni nell'Europa medievale, inclusa una serie in quattro volumi su Re Artù. È anche molto noto per le sue illustrazioni di pirati e gli viene attribuita la creazione dello stereotipo moderno dell'abbigliamento da pirata. Pubblicò il suo primo romanzo, Otto della mano d'argento, nel 1888. Illustrò inoltre racconti storici e d'avventura per periodici come Harper's Magazine e St. Nicholas Magazine. Il suo romanzo Uomini di ferro fu adattato nel film Lo scudo nero di Falworth (1954). Pyle si recò a Firenze, in Italia, nel 1910 per studiare pittura murale. Morì lì nel 1911 a causa di un'infezione renale improvvisa (malattia di Bright).
