Howard Pyle
Pioneiro da ilustração americana
Howard Pyle foi um ilustrador e autor norte-americano, principalmente de livros para jovens. Era natural de Wilmington, Delaware, e passou o último ano de sua vida em Florença, Itália. Em 1894, ele começou a ensinar ilustração no Instituto Drexel de Arte, Ciência e Indústria (atual Universidade Drexel). Após 1900, fundou sua própria escola de arte e ilustração chamada Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. Mais tarde, o estudioso Henry C. Pitz usou o termo Escola de Brandywine para se referir aos ilustradores e artistas da família Wyeth da região de Brandywine, vários dos quais tinham estudado com Pyle. Ele também é muito conhecido por suas ilustrações de piratas e é creditado com a criação do estereótipo moderno do traje de pirata. Publicou seu primeiro romance, Otto da Mão de Prata, em 1888. Também ilustrou histórias históricas e de aventura para periódicos como Harper's Magazine e St. Nicholas Magazine. Seu romance Homens de Ferro foi adaptado como o filme O Escudo Negro de Falworth (1954). Pyle viajou para Florença, Itália, em 1910 para estudar pintura mural. Ele morreu lá em 1911 de uma infecção renal súbita (doença de Bright).
