Hugh Lofting
Creò Dottor Dolittle
Hugh John Lofting era uno scrittore anglo-americano, formato come ingegnere civile, che ha creato il classico personaggio della letteratura per bambini Dottor Dolittle. Questo medico immaginario che parla con gli animali, ambientato in un villaggio inglese, apparve per la prima volta nelle lettere illustrate che Lofting inviava ai suoi figli dalle trincee dell'esercito britannico durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale. Lofting si stabilì negli Stati Uniti poco dopo la guerra e prima della pubblicazione del suo primo libro. Lofting, nato il 14 gennaio 1886 a Maidenhead, nel Berkshire, da Elizabeth Agnes (Gannon) e John Brien Lofting, era di ascendenza inglese e irlandese. Suo fratello maggiore, Hilary Lofting, divenne in seguito romanziere in Australia, essendo emigrato lì nel 1915. Lofting ha studiato al Mount St Mary's College a Spinkhill, nel Derbyshire. Dal 1905 al 1906, ha studiato ingegneria civile presso il Massachusetts Institute of Technology a Cambridge, nel Massachusetts. Prima di arruolarsi nel reggimento delle Irish Guards dell'esercito britannico durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale, Lofting viaggiò ampiamente come ingegnere civile. Non volendo scrivere ai suoi figli sulla brutalità della guerra, scrisse lettere immaginative che divennero poi la base dei romanzi per bambini di successo del Dottor Dolittle. Ferito gravemente in guerra, emigrò con la sua famiglia a Killingworth, nel Connecticut, nel 1919. Si sposò tre volte ed ebbe tre figli, uno dei quali, suo figlio Christopher, divenne l'esecutore testamentario del suo patrimonio letterario. Lofting morì il 26 settembre 1947 nella sua casa a Topanga, in California, a causa di cirrosi epatica. È sepolto nel cimitero Evergreen a Killingworth, nella contea di Middlesex, Connecticut.
