ヤーコプ・マティアス・シュムッツァー
赤チョーク表情研究の巨匠
ヤーコプ・マティアス・シュムツァーは、最初ウィーンで修行し、後にパリでヨハン・ゲオルク・ヴィレに師事した。サンギーヌ鉛筆、別名茶色鉛筆を用いた素描技法は、シュムツァーがヴィレから直接受け継いだものと考えられる。ヴィレは8歳年上のジャン=バティスト・グルーズと友人関係にあり、グルーズがシュムツァーにこのジャンルの絵画を描くことを促した可能性がある。シュムツァーが大量に制作したこれらの素描は、実際の肖像画というよりも、1698年に出版されたシャルル・ル・ブランの理論書『一般表情および特殊表情に関する講義』に基いてフランスで教えられていた種類の表情研究である。規律正しい素描技法は、銅版画の方法論を思い起こさせる——シュムツァーはウィーンでの初期の頃にすでに銅版画職人としての訓練を受けていた。
