James Abbott McNeill Whistler

James Abbott McNeill Whistler è stato un artista americano attivo durante l’Età dell’Oro americana e basato principalmente nel Regno Unito. Era avverso al sentimentalismo e all’allusione morale nella pittura, e un principale sostenitore del credo "l’arte per l’arte". La sua firma sui suoi dipinti prendeva la forma di una farfalla stilizzata con una lunga coda a forma di pungiglione. Il simbolo combinava entrambi gli aspetti della sua personalità: la sua arte è caratterizzata da una sottile delicatezza, mentre la sua persona pubblica era combattiva. Stabilì un parallelo tra pittura e musica e intitolò molti dei suoi dipinti «arrangiamenti», «armonie» e «notturni», sottolineando la primazia dell’armonia tonale. La sua opera più famosa, Arrangiamento in grigio e nero n. 1 (1871), comunemente nota come La madre di Whistler, è un ritratto della maternità venerato e spesso parodiato.
