James Hamilton
Illustratore di Filadelfia ispirato da Turner
James Hamilton iniziò come uomo d'affari prima di decidere di intraprendere una carriera nell'arte. Lavorò come insegnante di disegno a Filadelfia, poi viaggiò in Inghilterra nel 1854 per studiare le opere di Turner e altri grandi pittori di paesaggi. Dopo un anno all'estero, Hamilton tornò a Filadelfia, dove si affermò come illustratore, collaborando a volumi come Arctic Explorations, le memorie del Dr. Elisha Kent Kane, che aveva compiuto due spedizioni nelle acque dell'Artico. Nel 1875, Hamilton mise in vendita tutte le sue opere d'arte a Filadelfia mentre si preparava per un viaggio intorno al mondo. Tuttavia, arrivò solo fino a San Francisco, dove morì nel 1878.
