Jan Chełmiński
Berühmt für napoleonische Militärbilder
Jan Chełmiński, auch bekannt als Jan van Chelminski, geboren als Jan Władysław Chełmiński, war ein polnischer Maler. Chełmiński trat am 14. April 1875 in die Akademie der Bildenden Künste München ein (Matrikelnummer: 3144) und arbeitete in ganz Europa. Ab 1895 lebte er in New York, obwohl er 1893 die britische Staatsbürgerschaft erworben hatte. Er war zweimal verheiratet. Nach der Scheidung von seiner ersten Frau, Marie Henschel (1858–?), heiratete er Leonie Knoedler, die Schwester von Roland Knoedler aus dem berühmten New Yorker Kunsthandelshaus Knoedler. Chełmiński war zu seinen Lebzeiten vor allem für seine historischen Werke bekannt, insbesondere für solche, die sich mit der Militärgeschichte und den Napoleonischen Kriegen befassten.
