Jan Chełmiński
Célèbre pour ses scènes napoléoniennes
Jan Chełmiński, également connu sous le nom de Jan van Chelminski, né Jan Władysław Chełmiński, était un peintre polonais. Chełmiński est entré à l'Académie des beaux-arts de Munich le 14 avril 1875 (registre : 3144) et a travaillé dans toute l'Europe. À partir de 1895, il a vécu à New York, bien qu'il ait obtenu la citoyenneté britannique en 1893. Il s'est marié deux fois. Après avoir divorcé de sa première épouse, Marie Henschel (1858–?), il a épousé Leonie Knoedler, sœur de Roland Knoedler, de la célèbre galerie d'art new-yorkaise Knoedler. Chełmiński était surtout connu de son vivant pour ses ouvrages historiques, en particulier ceux traitant de l'histoire militaire et des guerres napoléoniennes.
